Chiropractic: is it really a thing?

[ 7 ] 17/11/2011 |

This month, I wanted to talk about a healing modality that’s close to my heart… so close to my heart, in fact, that I thought I’d do the unbiased thing and ask somebody else to write about it. So I asked Alexandra Virgo from Alive and Blogging, who proceeded to tell me that chiropractic is also so close to her heart that she didn’t know if she could write about it either! (Witness the strong passionate reactions chiropractic brings out in people!!) Anyway, I finally convinced Alex to bring her wonderful quirky voice to this website and give you a humorous, informative rundown. All you need to know about Alex is that she’s a fellow homebirther, uber-holistic and extremely old soul who is wise beyond her very young years :-) And all you need to know about chiropractic is, it changes lives and makes its followers super protective about its reputation… and the passing on of the Sacred Chiro Message. :-) Here goes…

Chiropractic: Is it really a thing?
Hi! My name’s Alexandra and I have gathered myself up a nice little collection of labels over the years… mother, partner, daughter, chiropractic student, chiropractic Assistant, chiropractic practice manager… ok, so I spend a lot of time around ‘chiropractic’. My partner is a chiropractor. Heck, my child’s godparents are even chiropractors!

What I find funny though, is that whenever someone asks me or my partner what we do for a living their second question is always, “Do you get your baby done/checked/adjusted/cracked?” It seems the strangest of questions to me and I often blurt out “of course” before even thinking, all social etiquette out of the window and probably spitting part of my canape into their sparkling wine! Oops.

So as you can see (read) I speak about chiropractic with the nauseating love and passion that newlyweds reek of (I think I’m allowed to say that because I’m not married yet).

What is chiropractic anyway? The most common description that I hear is something to do with sore backs, headaches and stiff joints. It sure is useful for such symptoms but I liken that to the suggestion that a car is just something with doors that you can open and close.

Enter… boring description: Chiropractors check that your nervous system is functioning correctly by finding and correcting subluxations. Your nervous system regulates all of your bodily processes and is involved in everything you do, from wriggling your big toe to calculating the square root of 961 (FYI: I googled it and it’s 31).

Does that really explain chiropractic? I’m going to say no. Especially not to someone who doesn’t care about their nervous system, or isn’t too fazed at what makes their kidneys excrete urine! So to me, chiropractic isn’t a thing – it is an idea, a philosophy, a set of vitalistic values and principles to live by and a lifestyle choice. Now I’m no expert but this is how I would really explain it:

Chiropractic…
…is what makes me eat more apples
…is what opens my mind to understand the world differently
…lends me great books to read
…makes me a better mum, partner, daughter and friend
…helps me to feel less stressed
…is my teacher, my coach, my spiritual guide, my challenges, my journey
…encourages me to explore and learn
…keeps me moving and active
…opens the door for me to a world of possibilities and a wealth of knowledge

And that’s just me!

My baby on the other hand… well she is developing exactly as she should be. She has no barriers holding her back from exploring the world because she is regularly adjusted. Her head is perfectly round, allowing her brain to grow in the right environment. Her joints are functioning properly, allowing her to move and explore with ease. Her spine is happy, supporting her organs, muscles and joints to do their job. Her nervous system (for those interested) is healthy, allowing her to sleep, eat, breath and live exactly as her body was designed to. And her parents, friends and family are well informed and regularly adjusted, giving her a stress-free, healthy, happy and safe environment to be herself.

So sure, go and see a chiropractor for your sore back or headache and take your child for their colic, earaches and falls BUT I warn you: you’ll almost certainly gain much more than you expected.

  2. Absolutely — my husband actually just adjusted our cat and dog the other night. Cat had a runny nose and was sneezing — all cleared up now!! :-)

Hi Rebecca and Alexandra – great guest post from a fellow Mum, blogger, homebirther and practice owner with my husband (he is the chiro). I love the way you described chiropractic as it is so true that your description is how it is for many people – it is what they feel and how it influences their life…way beyond the subluxation. We just got back from adjusting 200 people in a Fijian village and none of those people truly understood what it was all about but do you think they loved chiropractic? You bet! Thanks so much for sharing and I will be sharing it and paying it forward. Have a great weekend, both of you!

  4. Thanks for your comment Donna and welcome on board! Wonderful that you are also spreading the chiropractic message. As my husband says, ‘Chiro Wives’ are often more passionate about it than their Chiro husbands hahahha!!!

Awesome article..I too grew up working in Chiro offices…I remember back in the day when everyone thought I was a quack..now people are really integrating this wonderful tool ….Thanks for your wonderful story!

    Happy Adjusting~

  6. Thanks Dana! Unfortunately there’s still medico-white-coaters out there calling chiropractors ‘quacks’, which is astonishing considering some of the research coming out of top-level institutions (like Harvard!) proving what chiros have known all along: it’s safe, its effective and it significantly works!

Hi Rebecca/Alexandra – great article! I am also a passionate lover of Chiropractic – patient who became a Chiro Assistant and then manager of a Chiro Patient Education business (Wellness Practices). I have always been a healthy and active person but Chiropractic changed my life from something that felt less than ordinary to something that feels extraordinary, filled with many possibilities and the ability to cope with everything that comes across my plate mentally, physically, emotionally and then some.
